Adnoviv Announces Publication in Buildings and Environment Journal Demonstrating that Newly Developed Algorithm Enables TruePODS® Sensor to Detect Occupant Count
Honolulu, HI – April 24, 2023 — Engineers at Adnoviv Inc. have shown that the TruePODS® sensor can be used to detect occupant count for up to 10 occupants. Room-level occupancy estimation is a critical input for real estate management, including building optimization and energy-efficient building control.
Data was collected from a single sensor, with 1 through 10 occupants in a classroom at the University of Hawai’i. Analysis of this data, published in Building and Environment, shows that two time-frequency algorithms generate values that increase monotonically with the number of occupants. These results indicate that Doppler radar with wavelet-based signal processing may be an effective tool for occupant count in smart building applications.
Sensing the number of occupants in a room with a single sensor has been challenging to date. Future work will include testing these algorithms in more settings and determining how to best leverage the two algorithms to provide an accurate occupant count.
“This is the first time a single Doppler-radar based sensor has been used to count up to 10 occupants,” said Shekh M. M. Islam, first author on the paper and consultant for Adnoviv. “Our analysis shows that both of the algorithms we developed are promising, and lead to Adnoviv launching a count product in the near future.”
