HTDC Awards More Than $1 Million In Grants to Hawaii Companies for Research and Development

HONOLULU—The High Technology Development Corporation (HTDC) awarded grants to six Hawaii-based companies to support their research and development efforts of new products and solutions.
“We are pleased to support these federal grant recipients at the state level to help them expand on their research and development,” said Luis P. Salaveria, director of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, which oversees HTDC. “In addition to the contribution these companies have made to Hawaii’s innovation economy, their cutting-edge work has the potential to create meaningful and lasting benefits to our community.”
“Hawaii companies are developing solutions to address important issues in healthcare, energy, sustainable food sciences and defense technology, which will have national and international impacts,” said Robbie Melton, executive director and CEO of HTDC. “Funding these types of projects not only enables companies to bring their products to market, it also helps to build the state’s technology ecosystem and spurs innovation.”
The Hawaii Small Business Innovation Research (HSBIR) program offers funding to R&D companies that are developing new technologies. Grants are awarded in two phases. Companies must be recipients of federal SBIR grants to qualify for state level funding.
Phase 1 grants, which funds projects through the early stages of development, were awarded to six companies:
